The 3rd "Japan Art Journey Tour: Visiting 47 Prefectures" in Kanagawa was successfully concluded with a lot of support and participation.
This time, we spoke to Madara Kikyouji, who won the runner-up prize in the visitor contest held during the event, about his daily life and his works.
[Title] From the dazzling autumn sky
- Congratulations on the runner-up!
Q. Please tell us about the theme of the works you have exhibited this time and the thoughts you put into them.
- Thank you for the runner-up award. It's all thanks to you. I tried to draw a dazzling autumn scene in Japan.
- This time, the piece was a watercolor painting, and the contrast between the sky and the grassland was beautiful, making it a warm and charming piece that seemed like a snapshot of ordinary everyday life.
Q. Do you usually create landscape paintings like this?
- I try to paint images that I see with my own eyes as much as possible. I also paint Japanese culture and traditional beauty.
- So you paint motifs other than landscapes as well!
Q. What is it about Japanese culture and traditional beauty that you are particularly attracted to?
- Recently, a lot of nature has been bought up by foreign capitalists and is disappearing, but this is a place that has been left beautifully preserved as if time had stopped, and where people can experience nature.
Q. I saw your profile and it seems that you used to be active in the design field. What kind of work did you do? Are there any similarities between your current watercolor painting and your previous work?
- I'm a former designer at an automobile company. We don't have anything in common, but I think it's good that I enjoy drawing.
- After all, the best thing to do is to have fun while doing anything!
Q: When you're drawing, what moment or process do you find most enjoyable?
- It's fun to watch the process of it coming together.
Q. What do you pay attention to when creating your work? Also, I would like to hear about any fun things you draw or your favorite motifs.
- I draw the traditional beauty (landscape) of disappearing Japanese culture as it is! I also draw stray cats sometimes.
Q. Are there any events or exhibitions you plan to participate in in the future? If there are any other challenges you would like to take on, please let us know!
- March 20th to 31st artisans Kita-Kamakura [Spring Festival]
May 9th-13th [Three Artists MAK Exhibition] and
July 18th - 23rd at Nakahara Civic Center: Summer Colorful Festival.
We are also planning to exhibit at a number of other public exhibitions.
- The exhibition is already scheduled until around summer! If you're in the area, please come and visit.
Thank you for participating in this interview. We look forward to seeing your future work!

In the summer of 2017, I left the design department of a major company where I had worked for many years after undergoing surgery to remove nerve root compression from cervical spondylosis. I started watercolor painting to recover the function of the fingers on both hands, and in the summer of 2021, I started participating in public exhibitions in earnest. Currently, as an artist, I paint diligently and enjoyably every day with the desire to spread the vanishing traditional beauty of Japanese culture to the world through watercolors.
