The 3rd "Japan Art Journey Tour: Visiting 47 Prefectures" in Kanagawa was successfully concluded with a lot of support and participation.
This time, we spoke to Tetsuya Suzuki, who won the runner-up prize in the visitor contest held during the event, about his daily life and his works.
[Title] Life #0085
- Congratulations on the runner-up!
Q. Please tell us about the theme of the works you have exhibited this time and the thoughts you put into them.
- Thank you for awarding me the runner-up prize this time. I participated in From Artist's exhibition because I thought it was great that the exhibition was chosen by visitors' votes. The work I participated in this exhibition was based on the motifs of the heart, kidneys, liver, and cells, and has the theme of "the miracles and joys of being born into this world."
Q. I've heard that common motifs include "cells" and "hearts." Could you tell us what prompted you to start using these motifs, and if there are any anecdotes that led you to establish your current color usage and style?
- Yes, I was not very physically strong since I was a child, so I think I was more interested in my own body than most people. When I became an adult and wanted to draw a picture, the motifs of "heart", "cells" and "red blood cells" first came to mind, and at the same time, memories of being hospitalized in the hospital came back to me. Looking up from my hospital bed, the pure white ceiling, pure white walls, pure white curtains - the hospital is a world of pure white everything. I think that the unconscious desire to "repaint the white I was looking at that day (unpleasant memories) into a colorful world (happy memories)" is connected to my current use of colors.
Q. There are many artists, some of whom started drawing from childhood and others who started after retirement, but when did you start drawing? I'd like to hear about any memorable episodes from your painting career.
- A friend of mine asked me, "Why don't you try drawing?", and that's when I picked up a pen for the first time in 40 years since I was in junior high school. At first I drew pictures on paper with a ballpoint pen, but about a year ago I started drawing with acrylics. What made an impression on me while drawing was when I received a message from a parent with a 3-year-old daughter who said, "I'm so happy that she feels something when I show her my pictures!" Maybe I'm the youngest fan of my generation? Maybe (laughs).
Q. Is there any part of your work that you are particularly particular about or would like people to see?
- I think that by knowing my background in motifs such as "hearts," "cells," and "red blood cells," people will get a different impression from that of simple colorful pop art. Of course, I also love to be told that "the colors are lovely," "cute," or "cool," and I hope that people will feel free to express their feelings in their own way and cherish those feelings.
Q. Are there any events or exhibitions you plan to participate in in the future? If there are any other challenges you would like to take on, please let us know!
- I'm planning to hold a solo exhibition in Harajuku in May of this year, and will display a large (100-size) canvas. I want to express my world as one large painting that covers the entire room with many colorful pictures. I'm basically very curious, so I'm also creating a three-dimensional work for the solo exhibition, and if I get the chance, I'd like to try my hand at public art, such as on the walls of buildings, in addition to canvases.

- Thank you for giving me this opportunity. I look forward to your continued support.

Tetsuya Suzuki
Born in Saitama Prefecture in 1968. The common motif of all my works is the "heart" and "cells" which are internal organs of the human body. I think that's why I chose these motifs because I was not physically strong since I was a child. I know the shape and color of the "heart" and "internal organs" that are in my body, but I abstracted them in my own way and splashed them with colorful primary colors. The organs of the human body are very important and indispensable for maintaining our lives, but we tend to forget about them. I would like to deliver works that make viewers feel happy by making them realize, even just a little, the "preciousness of life" and the "miracle of being born into this world" through my works.
