1. Introduction

When it comes to interior design, choosing furniture and lighting is often featured, but not much attention is paid to "how to display art." The atmosphere of a room can change dramatically depending on how you arrange paintings, photographs, posters, three-dimensional artworks, etc. It's not enough to just hang them on the wall. Just by being mindful of eye level, balance of white space, and interaction with the space, art can evolve from "decoration" to "spatial presentation."

This time, we will introduce the basics of how to display and layout art that you need to know to create a stylish room.

2. Art is the switch that determines the character of a room

First of all, it's important to remember that art is not just a decoration, but an element that determines the character of a space. For example, decorating a room with an abstract painting in muted colors will create a sense of tranquility, while choosing colorful pop art will give the space a bright and positive impression.

The important thing is to think about the mood you want to create in this room. For a dining room where morning light pours in, choose refreshing and clear art. For a bedroom where you want to relax, soft-colored landscape paintings or watercolors work well.

3. Paying attention to eye height creates a professional look

Think about an art museum. No matter how large the exhibition space, the artworks are generally placed at eye level. There's a reason for this: the height at which people naturally look is the position at which art is perceived as most beautiful.

Similarly, when displaying art at home, placing it at a height of about 145-155cm from the floor will create a natural and beautiful balance. Of course, if the eye position changes, such as behind a sofa or beside a bed, you will need to adjust the height accordingly.

4. Be mindful of the "dialogue" between art and furniture

A room is made up of the relationship between "objects" and "space." The impression of art also changes depending on its position in relation to the furniture. For example, if you are displaying art above a table, keeping the width of the art within 70-80% of the table will create a beautiful, balanced look.

Here's an interesting technique: create a sympathetic relationship between your furniture and art. For example, place a nature-themed painting on top of a wooden chest. Or, create an urban feel by displaying a black-and-white photograph on a metallic stool. By arranging your furniture and art in a way that complements each other, the entire space will begin to tell a single story.

5. Leave space to breathe

One thing that is surprisingly often overlooked when displaying art is the existence of "white space." If you pack art right up against the wall, it will feel oppressive. On the other hand, leaving a moderate amount of white space will make the artwork itself stand out and give the entire space "room to breathe."

The trick is to leave enough space between the art and the ceiling or furniture. Even if you feel like one piece of art isn't enough, don't overcrowd it, but use the aesthetic of "space" to give meaning to the undecorated areas.

6. Create a sense of unity in the space by using a consistent color scheme

If you're having trouble choosing art, try observing the colors used in the room. The colors of the furniture, the patterns of the cushions, the texture of the rug. Pick one or two colors from these and choose a piece of art that includes them, and you'll create a sense of unity throughout the space.

However, you don't have to match the colors perfectly. By subtly shifting the tones or combining materials with different textures, you can create rhythm in the space and create an impression that you won't get bored of.

7. Walls aren't the only place to decorate.

Let's get rid of the fixed idea that art is something that should be hung on the wall. Place it directly on the floor, lean it against a shelf, or hang it from the ceiling - such free thinking will add a sense of openness and playfulness to the space.

We especially recommend the style of "incorporating art into the furniture." For example, you could slip a small picture frame into a bookshelf or place a small sculpture on a side table. A space where art blends naturally into everyday life is comfortable for those who use it and sure to leave a lasting impression on visitors. Since it's not a museum but your own space, you can decorate it however you like, rather than just hanging it on the wall.

8. Summary

Creating a stylish room doesn't require special taste or expensive artwork. Rather, the most important thing about displaying art is to carefully consider what kind of space you want to create and how you want to feel.

Art is not something that ends when it is hung on the wall; it breathes and changes with your life. Art is not something to display, but something to live with. Enjoy making small changes and creating your own aesthetic space.
