Salvador Dalí. What comes to mind when you hear the name? Beards? Melting clocks? Or other fantastical imagery? Dalí is one of the most important painters of the 20th century and his work is considered an icon of Surrealism.
Born in Catalonia, Spain in 1904, Dalí created strange and mysterious worlds that oscillate between reality and dream, reason and the unconscious. His works are visually astonishing and contemplative, as if watching strange landscapes unfold as real objects are transformed into impossible shapes and sizes.
One of his most famous works is the "Melting Watch." The way the clock slowly melts and flows symbolizes the relativity and uncertainty of time. His paintings of elephants with abnormally long legs also express a unique worldview that transcends reality.
Dalí's talent was not limited to his paintings, but also to his own persona: he positioned himself as a controversial character, well known for his beard and eccentric behavior, and his performances were often as talked about as his work.
Dali's works depict scenes that seem to exist only in dreams, with meticulous detail. Therefore, when you look at his works, you feel as if you are dreaming. However, behind the dreamlike images, there is deep thought and insight.
The world of Salvador Dalí is one that surprises, makes you think, and above all, entertains. His work allows us to transcend the boundaries between reality and dream, between reason and the unconscious, and allows us to see the world from new perspectives. And that is part of Dalí's appeal.
In the next section, we will talk about Dali's masterpieces.
・Representative works
"Scenes from a Cabaret" 1922
"Scene from a Cabaret" is one of his earliest works. Dali's work from this period was still in its early stages of transition to Surrealism, and the influence of Cubism can be seen. In this work, abstract and fragmented shapes depict a cabaret scene. The color palette is monochrome, using mainly black, white, and gray. The visual chaos and fragmentation show Dali's later path to Surrealism.
"Gala in the Window" 1933
Gala at the Window is a work that focuses on Gala, Dali's wife and muse. The work depicts Gala standing in front of a seascape seen through a window. Gala's body is painted translucent, allowing the scenery behind her to be seen through. This transparency symbolizes how important Gala was to Dali and the role she played in his creations. The motif of the window and the sea can also be interpreted as a window into Dali's dreams and unconscious world. The work expresses Dali's love and deep insight into his inner world.
"Burning Giraffe" 1936
"Burning Giraffe" is one of the works that represents the pinnacle of Dali's Surrealism. The work depicts a giraffe engulfed in scorching flames and a woman with abnormally long elephant legs riding on its back. The burning fire symbolizes war and destruction, and Dali himself reflects the situation in Spain, which is in turmoil due to civil war. Meanwhile, the woman with the long legs represents the incomprehensibility that transcends reality and Dali's unique fantasy world. This work deeply reflects Dali's inner world, which fluctuates between reality and unreality, beauty and ugliness, peace and destruction.
"Soft Structure with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War)" 1936
This work clearly represents the characteristics of Dali's surrealism, and is extremely famous for its "melting clock" motif. The "boiled beans" in the title refer to the soft, melted, drooping clock. This is a concrete representation of the flow of time, and is often used by Dali as a symbol to express the world of the unconscious. In the background is a desolate landscape, with swarms of ants, crabs, and Gala's face. These elements are thought to symbolize Dali's fear, anxiety, and fear of death. This work depicts the chaotic state of Dali's inner world.
"Homage to Newton" 1985
"Homage to Newton" is a 1985 painting by Salvador Dalí that pays homage to scientist Isaac Newton. It features an abstract portrait of Newton with his heart hanging from his chest and a hole in his head, symbolizing Newton's scientific insights and his discovery of the universal laws of physics. Through Dalí's surrealist medium, the piece beautifully illustrates the intersection of science and art.
"Profile of Time" 1984
"Profile of Time" is a 1984 painting by Salvador Dalí that revisits his signature theme of time. In this work, Dalí's signature "melting clock" is dissolved into the desolate landscape in the background. In the center, a woman's profile is depicted, with the melting clock merging with the contours of her face, symbolizing the intimate connection between time and human existence. The dark sky and desolate landscape behind her can also be interpreted as symbolizing the pitilessness of time and the loneliness of human beings. A brilliant combination of Dalí's unique perspective and technique, "Profile of Time" poses deep insights and questions to the viewer.

The exhibition focuses on Dalí's life and the works he produced after he began his career in the United States. It is an attempt to understand the kind of artist he was by delving into the complex world of Dalí, who presented both "Dalí the Surrealist" and "Dalí the Human" to the audience. Dalí's versatility is showcased through his oil paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures, as well as the works of other Surrealists such as Miró and Magritte.
Nagano Prefectural Art Museum
Exhibition title: Dali Prints - Fantastic Images
Period: July 13, 2024 (Sat) - September 16, 2024 (Mon)
Dali's multi-talented abilities were not limited to painting, but were also applied to a wide range of artistic fields, including printmaking, sculpture, objects, performing arts, jewelry design, advertising design, film, and writing. In particular, he had a deep love and knowledge for printmaking, which he began to work on in earnest in his late 50s, and left behind more than 1,600 prints throughout his life.
This exhibition will display around 200 of Dali's works, including prints that he produced with great enthusiasm from the 1960s to the 1970s, during his active career. While Dali's works retain his distinctive images, such as "Soft Clocks" and "Deformed Bodies," his soft lines drawn using etching techniques and his outstanding drawing skills also reveal his delicate sensibility.
This exhibition allows you to experience the essence of Dali, who is said to be the greatest genius of the 20th century. Don't miss this opportunity to experience the charm of Dali's art.
Kadokawa Musashino Museum 1st floor Grand Gallery
Exhibition title: Salvador Dali - Endless Enigma, Eternal Mystery -
Period: Wednesday, December 20, 2023 to Friday, May 31, 2024

In particular, in the main exhibition area, Hall 1, 32 high-brightness projectors are used to recreate Dali's mysterious world. Here, rather than simply projecting his works and archival photographs, the various motifs and elements of each masterpiece are decomposed and integrated while music resonates, creating an immersive performance like an orchestra.
In addition, the immersive digital art theater, consisting of 12 acts and lasting approximately 35 minutes, allows visitors to enjoy images from different periods of Dali's work, including a work themed on Cadaqués, a small village in southeastern Spain that had a major influence on Dali, works depicting religious motifs, luxury jewelry and interior space designs designed by Dali, and masterpieces from his Surrealist period.
