・Botticelli's life

Sandro Botticelli

Real name: Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi

Botticelli is an early Renaissance painter born in Italy. After studying painting for three years under Florentine painter Filippo Lippi and exploring realistic expression, he went on to create many masterpieces.

Due to the strong criticism of Christianity at the time, depicting Greek mythology in paintings was not considered good. However, despite this, Botticelli remained true to his beliefs and continued to paint paintings based on myths as a pioneer.

After becoming independent, he set up his own studio and produced many works that had a huge influence on Renaissance art.

Let's take a look at some of his masterpieces, which gracefully and beautifully depict the goddesses and virgins that appear in mythology.

・Botticelli's masterpiece

1486 "Birth of Venus"

I think everyone has seen this work at least once.

This work is based on a Greek myth in which Venus (the goddess of love and beauty) emerges from the sea after her birth, and is one of the masterpieces of the Renaissance. In addition to the realism style of drawing that has been the mainstream up until now, there are also quite a few decorative expressions. The delicate yet bold depiction of Venus reflects Botticelli's own pursuit of beauty.

1478 "Spring (Primavera)"

It is said that this work depicts the arrival of spring in an anthropomorphic way.

Venus also appears in this work. (A woman in the center of the screen, tilting her head and smiling) Compared to the Venus from ``The Birth of Venus,'' she looks modest, perhaps because she is wearing a costume.

1482 "Punishment of the Rebels"

This work was painted as a mural in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. This is a story from the Old Testament of the Jews who rebelled against Moses and Aaron.

1470 "Madonna in the Rose Garden"

It depicts the Virgin Mary with the infant Christ.

1485 "Madonna of the Magnificat"

It depicts the Virgin Mary being crowned by two angels.

Produced in 1496 "Slander"

This is a work from Botticelli's later years. It is said that Botticelli recreated this painting based on a ``slander'' by the Greek painter Apelles, but the original painting does not exist, so it is a work of great mystery.
