・What is Impressionism? ?

Impressionism, as the name suggests, refers to landscape paintings and portrait paintings in which the artist's own "impressions" are directly reflected in the work.

This art movement arose in France in the late 19th century.

Rather than accurately capturing the contours and colors of the motif, his work is characterized by expressing the feel of the light hitting the object and the atmosphere of the place.

・Painters representing Impressionism

Now that I have explained Impressionism, I will introduce the painters who represent Impressionism and their works✨

① Claude Monet “Impressions, Sunrise”

Claude Monet is highly regarded as the leading figure of Impressionism.

This ``Impression/Sunrise'' is also the origin of the name Impressionism, and the painters of this era were strongly influenced.

Born in Paris, he also painted other famous works that everyone has seen at least once, such as ``Woman with a Parasol'' and ``Water Lilies.''

②Paul Cézanne “Still Life with Apples and Oranges”

Paul Cézanne is known as the "father of modern art" because he had a great influence on 20th century artists such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.

Although he is an impressionist painter, he pursues a unique style of expression, and is known for his high contrast and vivid colors.

③Edouard Manet “Spring”

It is said that Edouard Manet was inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e prints.

At the time, he used innovative expressions in France, such as ignoring perspective and depth, and not drawing much light, shade, or shadow, which had been commonplace in the world of Western art.

④Camille Pissarro “Mathurin’s Garden, Pontoise”

Camille Pissarro, the oldest of the group, was called "the elder statesman of Impressionism" by art historian John Rewald. Due to his gentle personality, he was admired by Paul Gauguin and Edgar Degas, who were not good at socializing. As you can see from this work, it is characterized by a gentle brush stroke that conveys the atmosphere and warmth of the place.

⑤Pierre-Auguste Renoir “Miss Irene Caen d’Envers”

I'm sure many people have seen this picture of a girl at least once. Pierre-Auguste Renoir specializes in portrait painting, and his works are still well-known to this day. He is also the creator of a technique called ``brush separation,'' which involves not creating colors by mixing paints, but by arranging different colors finely to create the illusion that the colors are mixed.

⑥ Berthe Morisot “On the balcony”

When you think of painters from this era, don't you only imagine male painters?

However, Berthe Morisot was considered to be the most popular female Impressionist painter and was active. You will be captivated by the feminine, delicate and ephemeral touch.

⑦Marie Blackmon “Tea Time”

This is also a female painter, Marie Blackmon. Unfortunately, she is not well known as she has only a small number of works. However, as you can see, everyone will surely be attracted to the overwhelming drawing power and beautiful expressions.
