・What is a lithograph? ?

Lithography is a type of printmaking, also known as ``stone printing.''

When you think of prints, many people probably imagine something that is carved with a chisel and then printed onto paper.

However, as mentioned above, lithographs are unique in that they utilize the repulsive effect of water and oil, allowing them to be printed in almost the same condition as the image drawn on the printing plate.

~Lithograph procedure~

①Draw a picture directly on the slate using an oil-based art material (crayon, permanent marker, etc.).

⚠︎At this time, be careful not to touch the plate directly. Lithographs react to oil, so if your hands get oily, your work will get dirty.

② Apply gum arabic liquid on the stone tablet with the picture on it. By doing this, the slate is separated into parts that attract oil and parts that repel oil, and ink will only stick to the areas where the picture is drawn.

③ Sprinkle water on the stone tablet to get it wet.

⑤Place oil-based ink on the slate. The ink will stick only to the drawing area.

⑥Place the paper on top of the stone slab and press it with a press. The lithograph is completed.

・5 lithograph works you should know about

Now that we know what a lithograph is, let's take a look at the lithograph works of famous artists👀❕

1. Alphonse Mucha “Dream”

Alphonse Mucha is still loved by people all over the world. Most of his work is lithographed, having created numerous posters and decorative panels.

This "Dream" is a work created by Mucha in 1898 as a novelty calendar for Champenois, a printing company specializing in lithography. This work was so popular at the time that in addition to calendars, it was used by certain companies as posters and sold as decorative panels.

2. Edvard Munch "The Scream"

Munch's ``The Scream'' is very famous, but what you usually imagine is an eerie colored oil painting. In fact, there are five different versions of Munch's "The Scream," each painted using a different medium. The "scream" depicted in this lithograph has a slightly comical feel, and it feels like it's something you can relate to!

3. Joan Miro "Barcelona Series"

Joan Miró is a Spanish painter representing the 20th century. In addition to painting, he continued to create semi-abstract works using various techniques such as sculpture and ceramics. His ``Barcelona Series'' is a series of 50 lithographs created over two years.

Four. Honoré Daumier “Don Quixote”

Honoré Daumier was a 19th century French painter and a student of Renoir. He mainly drew caricatures, but this work is based on the novel ``Don Quixote'' by Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. It is said that when he created this work, his eyesight had deteriorated considerably, which led to his bold style of painting.

Five. Mt. Fuji and the train from Bernard Buffet's "Journey to Japan"

Bernard Buffet is a representative French painter of the second half of the 20th century. His works are characterized by rough lines and slightly eerie colors. He has created a series of works called ``From a Journey to Japan,'' in which he depicts Japanese landscapes and people with his unique worldview. This work is on display at the Bernard Buffet Museum in Shizuoka Prefecture.
