What kind of painting is Japanese painting? Introducing the history of Japanese painting and contemporary Japanese painters

What kind of painting do you think of when you hear the word "Japanese painting"?
Some may immediately come to mind, while others may not.
I also think that there are various works that come to mind.
It's your home country's culture, but you actually don't know much about it...?
I've summarized Japanese paintings!

・What is Japanese painting?
Simply put, Nihonga is a general term for traditional Japanese paintings!
The term "Japanese painting" that is commonly used today was created to distinguish it from the so-called oil paintings that were introduced from the West.
A word that describes the difference between Japanese painting and Western painting (oil painting)... In other words, roughly speaking, it represents the difference in painting materials.

It is based on a painting style that has been around for hundreds of years, and the painting materials are also traditional materials.
In general, natural paints such as sumi ink, mineral pigments, dried water, chalk, and dyes are used, and it is characteristic that they are painted on silk cloth or Japanese paper.
Metal materials such as gold (gold leaf, etc.) may also be incorporated.
Washi paper is extremely durable and seems to play a role in the survival of many works of art.
These art supplies are by no means the easiest to handle among the many art supplies,
It is said that learning the technique is not easy.

Also, regarding the style of painting, it is characterized by a flat expression without shading.
Although the color tone is not very rich and can be expressed in a variety of ways depending on the type of paint,
It seems that the expression is concise.

・History of Japanese Painting and Contemporary Japanese Painting It seems that the term ``Nihonga'' became common around the 20s and 30s of the Meiji era.
(In the first place, it is said that many Western paintings entered Japan after the Meiji period.
This makes sense, since prior to that, there was no need for the above-mentioned distinction. )
Until that time, there were different schools of traditional painting (such as the Kano school).
When art groups were born in the 1890s and exhibitions began to be held, an environment of mutual influence was created.
What happened was that the characteristics of each school were mixed together and the good parts were absorbed.
Furthermore, under the influence of Western painting, Japanese painting further developed.

Let's take a look at some of his representative works.

Today, traditional techniques, sensibilities, aesthetic sense, and expressions change with the times.
People are always asking what Japanese painting is.
New initiatives are also being taken, and an exhibition like this one was held at the end of last year.
