What kind of painting is Japanese painting? Introducing the history of Japanese painting and contemporary Japanese painters

When you hear the term "Japanese painting," what kind of painting comes to mind?
Some of you may be able to think of it straight away, while others may not.
I also think there are a variety of floating works.
It's a culture from your home country, but you may be surprised to find out that you don't know much about it...
I've put together a summary of Japanese paintings!

・What is Japanese painting?
Simply put, Japanese painting is a general term for traditional Japanese paintings!
The term "Japanese painting" that is commonly used today was created to distinguish it from the so-called oil paintings that were introduced from the West.
A word that describes the difference between Japanese painting and Western painting (oil painting)...in other words, roughly speaking, it describes the difference in the painting materials used.

It is based on a painting style that has been around for over a thousand years, and the materials used are traditional.
Generally, natural pigments such as ink, mineral pigments, dried water pigments, chalk powder, and dyes are used, and painting is characteristically done on silk cloth or Japanese paper.
Metallic materials such as gold (gold leaf, etc.) may also be incorporated.
Washi paper is extremely durable, which seems to have contributed to the survival of many of the works.
These art materials are not the easiest to handle among the many available.
It is said that it is not easy to master the technique.

In terms of his painting style, it is characterized by a lack of shading and flat expression.
The color tone is not too strong, and while there is a variety of expression depending on the type of paint,
It seems to be characterized by its conciseness of expression.

・The history of Japanese painting and modern Japanese paintingThe term "Japanese painting" seems to have become common around the 1880s and 1900s.
(It is said that Western paintings first came to Japan after the Meiji period,
This makes sense, since there was no need for the above distinction before then.)
Until that time, traditional painting was divided into schools (such as the Kano school),
In the 1880s, art groups were formed and exhibitions began to be held, creating an environment in which artists could influence each other.
The characteristics of each school began to blend together and the best parts were absorbed.
Furthermore, under the influence of Western painting, Japanese painting developed further.

Let's take a look at some representative works.

Today, traditional techniques, sensibilities, aesthetic sense, and expressions change with the times.
I am constantly being asked, "What is Japanese painting?"
New initiatives are also being undertaken, and at the end of last year there was an exhibition like this one.
