Learn about Japanese paintings! Thorough explanation of history and art materials and introduction of works

How much do you know about Japanese paintings?

Many people have probably heard of famous works such as the folding screen painting of the wind and thunder gods and the painting of a beautiful woman looking back...!

Japanese paintings have a strong impression of being painted by people from the past, but in fact, there are many modern artists who paint Japanese paintings, and there are even art universities that specialize in Japanese paintings.

So this time, let's take a deep dive into Japanese paintings, including when they started being painted, how they are painted, famous works, and more!

When did Japanese paintings begin to be drawn?

For some reason, I wonder if Japanese paintings were drawn around the Edo period? That's what I personally think, but what does it actually mean?

Also, when did the genre of Japanese painting become established? ?

According to research, it seems that the name "Nihonga" started to become popular around the 1870s, around the 1870s .

Until then, there were different names depending on the era and school, such as Kara-e, Yamato-e, and Ukiyo-e (which are still in use today), but from the Meiji period onward, foreign cultures began to flow in and exchanges with other countries became more active. As time went on, it seems that in order to distinguish it from Western oil painting, it came to be called ``Nihonga'' as a uniquely Japanese painting method.

What kind of art materials do you use?

Japanese paintings are often painted using natural paints such as paper, mineral pigments, gofun, and dyes. Some people seem to use materials such as gold leaf as art materials.

In addition, Japanese paintings are a painting method that has been inherited from ancient times, so unlike crayons or watercolors used in schools, it takes time and effort to learn the techniques. (It's amazing that you can study at an art university...)

What are some famous Japanese paintings?

Moronobu Hishikawa “Beauty in return” (17th century)

Kanzan Shimomura “Yoroboshizu” (1915)

Tanomura Takeda “Dark Shadows” (1831)
