What is oil painting?

Oil painting is said to have been established by European painters around the 15th century.

I think people generally have a strong impression of painting by mixing water and tube paint, but oil painting, as the name suggests, is paint that uses oil. Painting is done on canvas using a mixture of pigment powder that does not dissolve in water or oil, and drying oil.

Because the properties are different from water, some people may find it takes a long time for the surface to dry completely, and some may be concerned about the smell, so we recommend creating in a place with good ventilation.

The reason why so many oil paintings still remain is that there is a wide range of expression methods, such as diluting the paint and layering it like watercolor, or applying large amounts of paint over and over again to create thickness.

When oil paint dries, it becomes water resistant and is highly durable. Most of the paintings by Monet and Van Gogh that are displayed in museums are oil paintings, and one of the strengths of this art is that religious paintings and other paintings that were painted hundreds of years ago can remain almost unchanged since then. It's one of the!

Recently, the development and improvement of paints has progressed, and oil paints that can be diluted with water have come out, making it easier than ever to start oil painting!

What tools do you need for oil painting?

·canvas

It is called a support for drawing. At art supply stores, you can find wooden frames and cloth sold separately, or ``stretched canvas'' that comes with the canvas already stretched.

In the long run, it would be financially easier to buy something sold separately and replace the canvas yourself, but I want to start painting right away! I don't have the confidence to stretch the canvas! If so, we recommend stretched canvas.

In addition, there are many different types of canvas, including medium and fine grain, and different types of fabric, so try out several canvases to find the one that suits you best!

・Pencil, charcoal, kneaded eraser

Do this when drafting. I think that the darkness and hardness of the pencil is about 2B to 3B. There are many different types, so find the manufacturer and pencil density that suits you.

As for the famous ones, many people use Staedtler pencils, so it might be a good idea to start from there.

·sketchbook

Use for simple rough sketches and sketches before painting on canvas.

There is no problem with small ones, but depending on the size of the work, the rough impression may differ, so I think it is better to draw something as close to the finished size as possible!

・Fixer Chief

Used to fix pencil powder, etc. drawn in the draft onto the canvas.

If you draw without spraying, the color of the paint will get muddy due to pencil dust mixed in, so if you want to get beautiful colors, use a fixerchief to fix the sketch before you start painting.

・Oil paint

I think it's a good idea to start with the 12-color set sold by the manufacturer!

Contains basic colors commonly used for color mixing, as well as black and white tubes.

If you have a color that wears off quickly or that you use often, it may be a good idea to sell it separately and add it little by little.

In terms of cheapness, I think you can easily buy Holbein oil paints! Colors and characteristics vary slightly depending on the manufacturer, so once you get used to painting, try using paints from different manufacturers.

・Brush

There are a variety of brushes available, including ones with soft bristles and nylon brushes, but if you are using them for oil painting, pig bristle brushes are best.

It is highly durable and sturdy, so it is said to be good for painting with oil.

While painting, it is not easy to remove the paint from the brush, so multiple brushes are used.

We recommend that there are brushes of various sizes, such as flat brushes and fine brushes, so you can choose the brush according to the area you want to draw!

・Painting knife

Use this when adding paint boldly or mixing colors from the palette.

Like brushes, they come in a variety of shapes, so I think it would be useful to have two types, one thick and one thin.

・Brush cleaner

Used to clean brushes when putting away paint.

After shaking it with a brush cleaner, rinse it thoroughly with warm water and soap and let it air dry.

Brushes are very susceptible to damage, and when painting, damage to the brush can affect the quality of the painting. Treat it with care.

・Paper pallet

There are ceramic and plastic pallets, but we recommend paper pallets for ease of use!

It's cheap to buy, and you can tear up the used pallet and use a new one right away, so I think it's easy to use and doesn't require cleaning.

・Oil pot & picture plate

A container for storing dissolved oil used in paints. It takes some time to get used to the pot type, so if you are using oil paint for the first time, we recommend starting with a Japanese painting plate.

·Waste cloth

It is used for a variety of purposes, such as wiping paint off brushes and cleaning palettes.

They are sold at home centers and other stores, but since they are consumed in large quantities, I want to keep them as cheap as possible! You can also use clothes that you no longer wear. A cloth with a fine grain is easier to use and recommended.

◎Useful tools to have

·Work clothes

You will inevitably get dirty while working, so we recommend that you wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty beforehand.

An apron is fine, but it is preferable if it has a tie that covers the arms.

・Drying accelerator (medium)

Oil paint takes a long time to dry, so if you want it to dry quickly, it's best to use a special drying accelerator.

Each manufacturer has its own special medium, so it's best to choose one that matches the manufacturer of the oil paint you're using.

How do you paint with oil?

1.Rough sketch

In order to solidify the image of what I want to draw, I roughly draw the composition, shape and shading of the motif in a sketchbook, etc.

2.Draft

I draw on the canvas using charcoal or pencil.

Once you have the rough shape, use a fixer chief to fix the rough sketch powder before applying the color.

3. Actual painting (coloring)

The method of coloring varies depending on the person, but instead of trying to get close to the final shape from the beginning, I start by looking at the whole thing and creating a shape based on a rough sketch using lighter colors.

Once I have the shape, I roughly add the background color and motif color.

As if I were carving out the shape of the motif little by little, I layered the shadows, light, and other aspects little by little.

4.Drawing details

I will draw details such as shadows and light.

Draw while observing motifs such as the bright parts that are faintly visible in the shadows and the colors when light is reflected.

5.Finishing

I will re-observe the background processing and the overall look and adjust the tone.

When you can see the whole picture and draw until you are satisfied with it, it is complete.
