・What is Art Brut? ?
Art Brut is a word that means "raw art." This refers to art works that are mainly self-taught or created as a hobby.
It was invented in 1945 by French painter Jean Dubuffet.
Dubuffet criticized traditional Western standards of beauty and collected works by people who had no formal art education.
He praised works produced by people who had little contact with art institutions as original and highly humane.
Although Dubuffet himself attended art school for about half a year, he learned painting mostly on his own.
Art Brut is also called outsider art in English.
