[2023 Edition] Still life painting that colors the screen with watercolor. 5 recommended works

Do you have a favorite painter or genre of painting?

There are various types of painting, such as oil paintings, cutouts, and pencil drawings, but many people are especially familiar with watercolors, or have even experienced them in class during their student days.

I also remember using watercolors during arts and crafts and art class when I was in elementary and junior high school!

There are a variety of watercolor illustrations and landscape paintings, but this time I would like to focus on ``still life paintings'' by historically famous painters, flowers, and more!

Maybe some artists you know will appear...

About FROM ARTIST

Paul Cezanne

Speaking of Impressionism, along with Monet and Renoir! He is a famous painter.

I think there are many people who have a strong impression of oil paintings (in fact, I thought so too), but there is also a story that from the latter half of 1839 to 1885, he began to focus on watercolor paintings.

"Flower Pot" (1885)

There is a clear contrast between the bold white left and the black shadows falling behind the pots and leaves, giving it a warm feeling of late afternoon...!

charles dumas

He was a painter who was mainly active in America between 1883 and 1935. He may not be a very familiar artist in Japan, but even small children in America are familiar with him.

Many of his famous works are oil paintings, but many of his watercolor paintings remain.

"Poppy" (1929)

This work is said to be a masterpiece among his watercolor paintings. You can feel the bright orange color and the luster and freshness of the plants.

john sell cotman

A watercolor painter who was active in the early 19th century.

He has been painting since he was young, and was active in a wide range of fields, including becoming a university art professor and a member of the Watercolor Painting Society.

"Greta Bridge" (1806)

When it comes to watercolors, many people get the impression that they are associated with white margins and transparency, but I felt that many of Cotman's works tend to have a dull or somewhat dark feel to them overall.

In addition to watercolors, some of them are also painted using mediums such as rice paste, so it may be that various ideas were put into the art materials.

Raoul Dufy

Raoul Dufy is a French watercolor painter. Because he came from a poor family, it was not until about 40 years after his birth that his work became known to the world as a full-fledged painter.

"Anemone" (1950)

His clearly drawn outlines and unique touches were impressive, and there was a time when he was active as a designer. In his later years, he seems to have produced a series of works such as ``Anemone'' and ``Atelier.''

Emil Nolde

Emil Nolde was a German painter who was active from 1867 to 1956. In addition to oil paintings, he also left behind many watercolor paintings, and is said to be one of the most representative watercolor artists of this era.

Title unknown (around 1930)

Many of Emil Nolde's watercolor paintings feature landscapes and flowers as motifs, which may be related to the fact that he lived in Northern Europe at the time. You can feel the vivid colors, the blurring of water, and the fluid movement of water that is unique to watercolors...!

summary

Above, I introduced painters from various eras and countries, and even though the term "watercolor painting" can be summed up in one word, the atmosphere of each artist's work was completely different!

Of course, each painter has a different upbringing, and I think their styles and motifs also change depending on their attitude toward painting, how they started painting, and the influence of people they have met throughout their lives.

I think there's a lot of information that you can't get just from the internet, so if there's an exhibition of works by an artist you're interested in nearby, you'll want to go there. (Of course I can see the exhibited works live, but I also like reading the captions between the works that give details about the artist and the historical background.)
