Today we spoke to artist "idogaeru" who started his career as a painter in July 2022 and is actively exhibiting at various exhibitions.
Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to participate in the interview today!
What kind of work and activities have you been doing lately?
I started working as an independent painter in July of this year, but my main activities are exhibiting, selling, and selling my works at solo and group exhibitions at department stores and galleries.
I try to create a place where I can interact with artists and customers as much as possible.
I believe you have been involved in a variety of activities as an illustrator and painter, but are there any particularly memorable ones from your past activities?
This is an art event at Carrousel du Louvre that I participated in in 2021.
I set a goal to participate in this event about three years ago, and I made it a reality, so it's a very memorable event.
What is the most impressive piece of art you have seen so far? Please tell us your impressions at the time and why.
This is Ito Jakuchu's [Animals and Vegetables].
The impression of the work is simply overwhelming.
The energy that paintings have is amazing, and I respect their passion for wanting to try different things with their paintings.
I heard that you used to mainly work as an illustrator in digital art, but now you are also focusing on creating works in acrylic gouache. Please tell us what prompted you to create analog works.
The impetus for drawing analog was that I decided to participate in the 2021 Louvre event.
At that time, I spoke to an artist who is active overseas, and he advised me that analog works might be more appealing than digital works, so I completely changed my style.
You are taking on the challenge of creating works in a variety of genres, but are there any particular things you keep in mind when creating your works?
I try to create works that are full of passion so that people can understand the feelings that cannot be conveyed just by looking at a painting, but when I explain them in words or text.
In recent years, many people's work has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, but has it affected or changed your work as an illustrator or author?
As I mentioned at the beginning, I recently started out on my own as a writer, and up until then I had been working as an employee at a restaurant. My work as a writer hasn't been affected that much by the coronavirus pandemic, but my feelings have changed a lot.
There were many customers at my workplace who had a hard time due to the coronavirus pandemic, but I was inspired by seeing them take on new challenges to try to cope with the situation, so I decided to become an independent artist as well. It's done.
Many of idogaeru's works use "time" as a motif, but what kind of image does the past and future have for you?
This also explains the work, but I think that the past is like a collection of various colors and shapes that have accumulated various experiences.
And I have an image of the future as a completely unexplored land where no one has set foot yet.
In my work, I express the present by mixing the past and the future in one motif.
Are there any expressions or themes you would like to try in the future?
Up until now, I have only made flat objects, so I would like to try my hand at expressing them in three-dimensional objects.
I would like to paint things I made myself in rich colors.
Ideally, I think it would be interesting to create something like a Buddhist statue painted in rich colors.
I would love to see the richly colored Buddha statues in person if they were actually made!
By the way, do you have any current goals or aspirations?
It may seem very reckless, but my intention is to appear at Art Basel in 2025.
I have a strong desire to develop my skills to the point where I can participate in Basel.
Lastly, is there anything you would like to tell the viewers of FROM ARTIST?
This is also the reason why I am an artist, but I believe that anyone can create their ideal future at any time if they believe in their own potential and move forward. I hope that we can create a future where we can celebrate and die laughing.
I will continue to work hard to prove this, so I would be happy if you could remember that there is a painter named idogaeru.
