コンテンポラリーアートとは?モダンアートとの違いも交えて解説 - FROM ARTIST

What is contemporary art? Explanation including the difference from modern art

Are you familiar with the term "contemporary art"?
I'm ashamed to say that I didn't know about this until I started working with FROM ARTIST...
However, it may be necessary to know about art genres, not just contemporary art, in order to be able to access more works that you like.
Let's learn about its definition together!

・What is contemporary art ?
First of all, contemporary means "modern" or "today's."
The Japanese translation of contemporary art is simply "modern art."
In Japan, it is often called "contemporary art."
However, since the term "modern" does not limit it to a specific era, it is very difficult to define.
It generally refers to works that originated around the early 20th century.
"Contemporary art" is a general term used to describe avant-garde and new artistic expressions that strongly emphasize the common characteristics of the era, i.e., contemporaneity, and are not bound by previous concepts.

One of the characteristics of his work is that it is difficult to understand the work itself without first understanding its background, due to its unconventional expression.
Among these, art in which the concept of the work itself is the main element is called "conceptual art."

・Difference between contemporary art and modern art
A word that is close to contemporary art is "modern art."
But there seems to be a clear difference.
Modern art is a term that refers to modern art.
"Modern" refers to the generation before "contemporary," meaning that modern art refers to works from a generation before contemporary art.
Specifically, it seems to correspond to art from the 1860s to the 1970s.

The characteristic of modern art is that most of its artists experienced World War I and World War II.
What is most striking is that he has broken away from the stereotypical techniques used in art up to that point and is tackling a variety of new challenges.
It can be said that this was an innovative period that continued to question the fundamental concepts of art.

On the other hand, "contemporary art" is based on the attempts made in "modern art."
Furthermore, we are experimenting with new forms of art and seeking a shift in not just concepts but also the "values" of art.
Contemporary art is work that is creating new artistic values for the current era.
