1. Introduction - When the canvas of winter unfolds

As the season changes to winter, the world slowly begins to take on a different look.
The air is clear, the air is quiet, and even the sound of the wind seems to take on color.

Winter is a season when nature itself creates a work of art, with a silence and transparency not found in any other season.

In our daily lives, we unconsciously see many "winter artworks," such as the light of illuminations, the pale morning light filtering through the window, the white smoke of our breath, and the patterns left by the snow.
All of these are expressions of the colors, shapes, and textures that the seasons themselves create.

In this column, we will reinterpret the colors and expressions that winter brings as works of art.
Colors that stand out in the cold, shapes that emerge in the silence, and warmth that gently lights up your heart.

Take your time and step into the world of art that winter brings with it.

[Work title] Starry Dew Garden

[Artist name] Kasumiran

[Year of production] 2025

[Artwork orientation and size] Square, 22.8cm long x 22.8cm wide (approximately 2.3cm thick)

[Framed] None

Description of the work:

In the quiet garden, where the atmosphere of night still lingers, the "star dew" that shines on the tips of the leaves gently twinkles.
This is art that captures the beauty of that moment.

The deep blue background is a tranquil world that resembles the night sky or the deep sea.
The white plant pattern layered on top of it softly emerges,
The light scattered in the clear resin sparkles like stardust or night dew.

Depending on the light, the blue will sink deep and the white will softly stand out.
Another charm of this piece is that its expression changes depending on the angle.
If you display it near indirect lighting or in a place where natural light enters,
The quiet atmosphere of the garden is felt even more vividly.

Just place one in a relaxing space such as your living room, bedroom, or workspace.
A calm time passes, making your breathing feel deeper.

It goes perfectly with wooden furniture, Scandinavian minimalist interiors, ceramics and plants.
This is perfect for those who "love living in a place that is close to nature" and "want to be soothed by blue art."

The inspiration for this work came from the white outline of a plant I saw at night,
A small dewdrop quietly glistening. That simple sight captured my heart.
I really wanted to leave that impression, so I created a work of art.

[Care]
A light dusting with a soft cloth is sufficient.
Please avoid strong friction on the resin part and leaving it in direct sunlight for long periods of time.

2. The "colors of silence" created by winter light

The light of winter lacks the intensity of summer, nor the deep golden color of autumn; it feels somehow subdued and soft.
Yet, on a crisp morning, it has a crisp texture, as if a transparent film were layered over it.

This light creates the "colors of stillness" that are unique to winter.

For example, the pale blue-gray that spreads across a winter morning.
Looking out the window, you can feel the day slowly melt away.
The weaker the light, the deeper the shadows and the clearer the outlines.

When an artist paints a winter scene, the atmosphere can change dramatically just by changing the amount of light that shines in, and this is because of the unique nature of light.

Also, the purple-pink sky seen at winter dusk.
The subtle gradations change with each passing day, making it one of the most ephemeral works of art created by winter.

Winter light is quiet and subdued, but it is this delicacy that has stimulated the sensibilities of artists.
Low light allows colors to stand out, and deep shadows deepen understanding of shapes.

It is as if nature is telling us, "The less visible something is, the more beautiful it is."

[Work title] From the Hierarchical World: "Night on the Galactic Railroad"

[Artist name] MAJO

[Year of production] The year and number of years of production are not fixed, and the piece continues to grow by being immersed in spring water each time, resulting in its current state. We hope that by taking this piece to the forest or sea from the moment it is delivered to your hands, you will be able to enjoy further changes and transformations in the light.

[Orientation and size of the work] Square, diameter 13.6cm x height 3.7cm

[Framed] No

Description of the work:

Tosai, ceramic works

This is connected to Miyazawa Kenji's "Night on the Galactic Railroad."

When we connected to what Kenji was looking at, we found that there were many layers, and necessary information was coming down from various different worlds of time and space.

Kenji received this information while he was still living on this three-dimensional Earth.
There is testimony from a former student at Kenji's agricultural school that he wrote down his notes in his notebook with incredible speed.

I am not good at writing things down as quickly as Kenji, so I tried to use the power of clay to bring down information from different layers of time and space onto a vessel.

When I see what Kenji saw in a visible form like this, things I hadn't noticed before suddenly become clear, and things I had thought were strange no longer seem so strange.

That's the feeling I have.

When information from each space-time emerges from the tip of the pure gold paint brush in a single vessel, it is only then that one can realize, "This is clearly drawn from the layers of 'Night on the Galactic Railroad,'" or "This is probably a 'Yama-nashi'."
I began to understand.

And another piece of work,
Sometimes they look like intangible sparkling energy particles, and other times they look more concrete.
For example, even with "Yamanashi" alone, I feel that there are many layers within this one work.

There are many of Kenji's works,
People say it's for children or religious,
I think this is because what a reader sees varies depending on which level of entrance they use to enter Kenji's world.
I feel that it is precisely because Kenji himself did not guide readers by saying, "I want you to read my work like this," but instead tried to convey what came to him as it was, without even understanding it himself, that so many of these entrances remain intact to this day.

I feel that the works that emerged from the clay through my tube somehow revealed the way that Kenji's works span different layers, combined with the subtle energy of the gold leaf.

It seems as if many layers of connections are overlapping and appearing within a single clay vessel.
I hope you can feel it in your heart.

◇Material: Pottery clay, pure gold leaf, glass

We take photographs with care to bring out the energetic characteristics and individuality of the works as much as possible, but please understand that there may be differences between the actual works and the photographs.

3. A "festival palette" decorates the city

In winter, the city is filled with another kind of art that is different from nature.
Illuminations, lights, and Christmas decorations... It's the season when the whole city is transformed into one giant canvas.

Gold, silver, deep red, emerald green.
In the crisp winter air, these colors shine even more vividly.
The light stands out against the dark night sky, and its contours appear sharper than in summer.

Although it is artificial light, illuminations are also a "palette of celebration" that moves people's hearts.
Cities around the world compete to hold light events in winter, with each light being designed as a work of art.

In contrast to the quietness of winter, the lights of the city are colors that symbolize "joy," "warmth," and "hope."
A casual sight can bring a small artistic experience into someone's everyday life.

[Work title] Illuminated scenery

[Artist name] yoshiaki

[Year of production] 2024

[Artwork orientation and size] Landscape: 51.5cm x 72.8cm

[Framed] No

Description of the work:

I used acrylic paints and pastels. I digitally processed the image while leaving the traces of the drawing I wanted to achieve. It was printed on B2 size, thick, high-quality matte paper. I used a protective fixative that protects the color and material for durability.

When I was still a child, the night view of the small town on the opposite bank overlapped with the trees of the shrine on the hill, creating an unexpected scene of Christmas illuminations.

4. The beauty of nature's "white and shadow"

The color that symbolizes winter is, of course, white.
However, the white is by no means monotonous, and has a surprisingly diverse range of expressions.

The white of the snow can take on a bluish tinge in the morning light, or turn matte under cloudy skies, and at dusk a faint pink of cherry blossoms shines through.
When shadows fall on the snow, they create shapes that look like soft sculptures.

The contrast of "white and shadow" depicted in nature is the moment that most beautifully embodies the relationship between light and form.
The intricate patterns of snowflakes and the cracks running across the surface of frozen water... countless "natural designs" are hidden in the winter landscape.

It is this delicacy and randomness that attracts artists to snowy landscapes.
It becomes beautiful without calculation.
This perfection is what makes winter so appealing.

5. The "colour of warmth" that lights up in your heart

The charm of winter isn't just the cold.
The "colours of warmth" found within them are what resonate deeply with people's emotions.

The red light of the stove, the orange of the fireplace, the steam rising from a hot drink, the beige of a thick blanket.
These colors are also the "colors of gentleness" that we naturally crave during the cold season.

It is because of the cold that warmth feels so vivid.
This phenomenon can be called psychological art.
Many of the colors that we are drawn to in winter are also "colors that the human heart needs."

Winter-themed artwork often effectively uses the contrast between cool and warm colors.
Cold and warmth, quiet and bustling.
Winter is the season when these two extremes coexist most beautifully.

[Work title] Blue Silence

[Artist name] M.Okamoto

[Year of production] 2025

6. Conclusion - Painting the colors of winter with your own sensibility

The colors that winter brings slowly blend together the delicacy of nature, the splendor of the city, and the warmth of people's hearts.
The same scenery never appears twice, and the color of the sky changes completely from day to day.
That is why winter can be called the "season for sharpening your senses."

Just taking a moment to stop in the midst of your busy schedule and notice a change in color can change the way you see the world.
Winter is the season that gently brings us such small discoveries.

What is the color of winter for you?
It could be a pale blue or a soft orange.
There is not just one answer, but rather an abundance that spreads throughout your heart.

Please continue to enjoy the art that the winter season creates freely in your own unique colors.
