Every piece here was painted by D within the walls of prison.
Its foundation lies in Caravaggio’s The Inspiration of Saint Matthew.
The vase is not a symbol of luxury but a humble object obtainable in confinement.
Matthew wears a prisoner’s uniform, the sacred drapery replaced by a coarse prison blanket.
On his shoulder rests the insignia “99,” marking nearly a century of faultless endurance behind bars.
Yet unbeknownst to him, death had already claimed him within the cell.
Only when the angel appeared to guide him did he awaken to that truth.
With but one year left to complete a hundred flawless years, perhaps he still longed to remain.
Thus irony breathes through the work.
