中央の物体がカラビ・ヤウ多様体です。カラビ・ヤウ多様体とは理論物理学に現れる空間で、我々が生きている4次元時空の至る所にへばりついている（4次元時空が浸っている）とてつもなく小さな空間です。この空間の構造が我々の4次元時空の性質に反映されているとされています。背景の図はカラビ・ヤウ多様体と密接に関係した指数定理を説明するための図です。指数定理から求まる数はこの世に存在する粒子の数と対応していると考えられています。カラビ・ヤウ多様体は実際には6次元空間ですが3次元（2次元）に射影して視覚化してあります。
